The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has explained the cause of the prolonged power outage affecting residents around the Wasa Akropong Youth Center in the Wasa Amenfi East Municipality.
According to Mr. Benjamin Duodu, the ECG Manager for the Wasa Akropong District, the problem began when one of the transformers serving the area broke down. While ECG was preparing to replace the damaged transformer, some residents allegedly engaged unqualified or “quack” electricians to connect their lines to another nearby transformer.
Unfortunately, this act led to overloading and damage to the second transformer as well.
> “We lost a transformer at one location, and while we were preparing to replace it, some customers engaged quack electricians to transfer their lines to a nearby transformer,” Mr. Duodu explained.
“Eventually, this second transformer also got damaged because of the heavy load transfer.”
He added that ECG has already replaced the first damaged transformer, but cannot restore power yet because doing so could destroy the new one.
> “If we energize the new transformer now, the reverse load may cause damage again. That’s why we want to get a replacement for the second transformer before restoring power,” he noted.
Mr. Duodu also revealed that the district office is tracing and disconnecting all illegal line transfers made during the outage to ensure a safe and stable supply once restoration begins.
He urged residents to be patient and to avoid using unqualified electricians, stressing that such actions worsen the situation and delay the restoration process.
