The Government of Ghana has strongly condemned the military coup in Guinea-Bissau, describing it as an attack on democratic governance and a disruption of the country’s electoral process.
In a statement issued on 26th November 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the coup, carried out by elements of the Guinea-Bissau military, overturned the will of the people who had voted peacefully in the presidential and legislative elections on 23rd November.
Ghana expressed deep concern about the attempt to interrupt the country’s democratic path and the obstruction of the expected announcement of election results scheduled for 27th November. The government called for the immediate restoration of constitutional order and urged all parties to respect democratic procedures.
The statement emphasized that any issues arising from the elections must be resolved through peaceful, transparent, and legally recognized means.
Ghana also demanded that the rights and safety of citizens and foreign nationals be protected. It specifically highlighted the need to ensure the security of ECOWAS Election Observation Mission officials currently deployed in Guinea-Bissau.
The government further appealed to the people of Guinea-Bissau to remain calm and avoid actions that could increase tension. It reaffirmed Ghana’s support for ECOWAS and the African Union as they work together to address the situation in line with regional and continental principles of democracy, good governance, and constitutional rule.
