President John Dramani Mahama has cautioned that recent one-sided decisions by some countries are weakening the international trading system that many nations depend on.
He said countries must come together and form what he described as a “coalition of the willing” to protect shared interests and promote fair trade.
President Mahama made these comments on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, when Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, paid a courtesy call on him at the Jubilee House.
He explained that after the Second World War, the world created systems that allowed countries to discuss challenges and find solutions that benefitted everyone. He pointed to the Millennium Development Goals as an example, saying millions of people escaped poverty because countries worked together.
President Mahama also noted that nations will have to review their progress on the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
According to him, the global trading system built over many years is now under pressure because some countries are making decisions without consulting others. He said this makes it even more important for countries with similar beliefs and goals to strengthen cooperation and work together.
