The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has raised serious concerns about how some senior high school students are using government-issued tablets under the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme.
According to the minister, the tablets—which are supposed to support digital learning—are being misused by some students to watch pornographic content instead of accessing educational materials.
Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, November 28, Mr. Iddrisu said he was informed that many of the tablets distributed to students are not fully customised. This has allowed students to install or access content that is not meant for academic work.
“My attention this morning, Mr Speaker, was drawn to the fact that many of the devices are not customised and the students are using it for other purposes, including pornography, which is not acceptable,” he said.
The minister also revealed that government plans to distribute about 1.3 million tablets nationwide. So far, about 980,000 tablets have already been delivered to schools.
He explained that the tablets are meant to give students access to learning materials, including curriculum-based content uploaded onto the devices. However, the lack of full customisation on some tablets has created room for misuse.
Mr. Iddrisu assured Parliament that the ministry is working to ensure that all tablets are properly secured and customised to prevent students from accessing inappropriate content.
