The National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) has arrested an individual suspected of creating and operating several fake social media accounts impersonating the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat.
According to the Secretariat, the suspect had been using these fraudulent accounts to deceive unsuspecting members of the public with promises of scholarship opportunities, often demanding money or personal information under the guise of processing fees.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat commended the NIB for swiftly tracking down and apprehending the suspect, describing the arrest as a significant step toward curbing online fraud targeting scholarship applicants.
“The Secretariat wishes to assure the general public that it remains committed to ensuring transparency and fairness in the scholarship application process. Any person found impersonating or using the name of the Secretariat for fraudulent purposes will face the full rigours of the law,” the statement read.
The Secretariat further urged all individuals who may have fallen victim to such scams or made any payments to the fake accounts to report immediately with supporting evidence.
Victims are advised to submit all evidence or complaints to:
📞 Hotline: 0302 907 051 / 0302 907 058
📧 Email: report@scholarships.gov.gh
Meanwhile, the Secretariat has cautioned the public to verify all information about scholarships solely through its official website and verified social media pages, emphasizing that it does not request payment for scholarship processing or placement.
The arrest serves as a reminder to the public to exercise caution online and avoid engaging with unverified accounts claiming to represent government agencies.
