The continuous power outage at the Wasa Akropong Youth Center has become a matter of great concern to residents and business owners in the area. For more than a month now, the community has been left in darkness, and many people are struggling to understand why power has not been restored despite the installation of a new transformer.
According to Mr. Benjamin Duodu, the immediate past manager of the Bogoso District of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), the situation began when a transformer at one location got damaged. While preparations were being made to replace it, some residents, without proper authorization, engaged unqualified electricians to transfer their lines to a nearby transformer. Unfortunately, the illegal load transfer caused that second transformer to also break down.
Mr. Duodu explained that although the first damaged transformer has now been replaced, energizing it immediately could lead to another disaster. The new transformer might also get damaged if the excess load created by the illegal connections is not corrected.
He added that the ECG team is currently working to identify all the unauthorized connections and disconnect them before restoring power to the area. This, according to him, is the only way to ensure a safe and lasting power supply to the Youth Center and nearby communities.
However, while these technical reasons are understandable, it is equally important for ECG management at the Bogoso District to speed up the process and communicate clearly with the affected residents. The people should not suffer for the mistakes of a few individuals.
The residents of Wasa Akropong Youth Center pay their bills like every other customer and deserve fair treatment. ECG must act swiftly to correct the problem, replace the damaged transformer, and restore electricity as soon as possible.
Punishing the entire community for the wrongdoing of a few is not only unfair but also discourages public trust in the company. The people are not asking for much — only light, which is their right as customers
