The African Union Commission (AUC) has restated its strong commitment to protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty, religious freedom, and the rule of law. This was made known in a statement issued by the Information and Communication Directorate of the AUC in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
According to the Commission, Nigeria remains a key and valued member of the African Union, playing an important role in promoting peace, security, and regional stability across Africa.
The AUC expressed concern over recent statements made by the United States of America, which accused the Nigerian government of being involved in the targeted killing of Christians and threatened possible military action.
In its response, the African Union emphasized that Nigeria has the sovereign right to handle its internal affairs, including security and human rights, in line with its Constitution and international laws. The statement noted that any foreign engagement must respect Nigeria’s territorial integrity and independence.
The Commission also highlighted that Nigeria’s Constitution guarantees freedom of religion and belief, and the government strongly rejects all forms of religious persecution.
Acknowledging Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges such as terrorism, banditry, communal violence, and resource-based conflicts, the AU called for regional and international cooperation to support Nigeria’s efforts in maintaining peace and justice.
The AUC made it clear that it rejects any attempt to portray Nigeria’s security problems as solely religious. It said that oversimplifying the situation could harm peaceful coexistence and make it harder to find real solutions.
Furthermore, the African Union called on international partners, especially the United States, to engage with Nigeria through peaceful dialogue and capacity-building rather than through threats or military pressure. Such actions, it warned, could destabilize the region and undermine peace efforts.
In conclusion, the African Union Commission reaffirmed its readiness to assist Nigeria and other member states through peacekeeping, security support, and development programs while respecting their sovereignty and promoting unity across the continent.
