The National Tripartite Committee (NTC) has announced a 9% increase in Ghana’s National Daily Minimum Wage (NDMW) for the year 2026. This new rate moves the daily minimum wage from the 2025 figure to GHC 21.77.
The decision was made after a meeting held in Accra on Sunday, 9th November 2025. The committee, made up of representatives from the government, employers, and organized labour, considered factors such as the cost of living, the business environment, and employment levels before reaching the agreement.
According to the NTC, the new minimum wage will take effect from 1st January 2026. All employers and institutions paying below the new rate are required to adjust their wages accordingly by that date. Any establishment that fails to comply will face sanctions under the law.
The committee also recommended that the 2026 minimum wage be tax exempt, meaning workers earning the minimum wage will not have taxes deducted from it.
The communiqué was signed by:
Hon. Dr. Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo (MP) – Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment
Hon. Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson (MP) – Minister for Finance
Nana Dr. Emmanuel Adu-Sarkodee – President of the Ghana Employers’ Association (GEA)
Mr. Joshua Ansah – Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC)
Meanwhile, the Communications Officer for the Wasa Amenfi East NPP, Mr. Samuel Amuah, has expressed disappointment in the government over the 9% increase.
According to Mr. Amuah, the increment is too small considering the current economic hardship facing Ghanaians. He said God is watching those who were quick to criticize former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo but are silent today when things are not going well.
In a video he shared on Facebook, Mr. Amuah also criticized Hon. Dr. Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo, the Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, for approving what he described as an unfair and disappointing 9% wage increase.
Mr. Amuah called on the government to be more sensitive to the struggles of ordinary Ghanaian workers and to take stronger steps to improve their living conditions.
