The Western Regional Office of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has taken another major step toward improving disaster preparedness and response across the region. On Tuesday, December 2, 2025, the office held an orientation workshop for Metro, Municipal, and District Directors at the Residency Conference Hall of the Western Regional Coordinating Council in Sekondi.
The workshop focused on the formation and reactivation of Disaster Volunteer Groups (DVGs), a critical component in strengthening community-level disaster response. The Western Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph Nelson—who also chairs the Regional Disaster Management Committee—graced the event. Other key participants included the Deputy Director General in charge of Operations at NADMO Headquarters, Heads of Regional Security Agencies, Regional Director Mr. Daniel Darlington Atsitso, Regional Deputy Directors, and all 14 NADMO Directors from the various MMDAs.
Delivering his keynote address, Hon. Joseph Nelson highlighted the vital role of proactive disaster management and the contribution of DVGs in responding swiftly to emergencies. He encouraged the directors to make the most of the orientation and apply the lessons learned to strengthen disaster response mechanisms in their jurisdictions.
Participants were taken through sessions on disaster risk reduction, the responsibilities of DVGs, and essential emergency response procedures. The training aimed to equip them with the tools and knowledge needed to mobilize, coordinate, and manage volunteer groups effectively.
The establishment and revitalization of DVGs remains a central strategy for NADMO as it works to build resilient communities and improve local preparedness against disasters. The orientation is expected to enhance the capacity of NADMO officers and improve the region’s overall response to emergencies.
